* Petrified wood is the result of a tree that has been completely transformed into stone through the process of permineralization. All organic material (i.e. wood) has been replaced by minerals (usually a silicate, such as quartz), while the original structure of the stem tissue is preserved. Therefore, petrified wood is a three-dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrification process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen that prevents aerobic decomposition. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals into the plant's cells; as the plant's lignin and cellulose break down, a stone mold forms in its place. Petrified wood is 6 to 20 million years old.
* Since petrified wood is not a homogeneous material, it may contain natural cracks and holes. These holes are filled with transparent or colored resin.
